Instructions

Music is different from noise because music is made up of a regular sound pattern. It has pitch, rhythm and quality. Pitch has to do with the frequency of vibrations. Close vibrations produce high notes and spread-out vibrations produce low notes.

Be aware of ‘High’ and ‘Low’ sounds in your environment! Identify sounds around your home and in the neighbourhood. If you have a pitch pipe at your disposal, you will be able to decide which note the sound is creating. For example, most car horns are honking an “F”.

Just as your child first begins to learn his or her native language by ear, every musician must learn the language of music --- pitch---- BY EAR. Your ear is the key to your musical enjoyment because music is HEARING art.

Tips

Adjusting off-sounding notes until they’re “in tune” again
