Start with your fingers spread in front of your face with the palm facing outwards. Count each finger while pointing to it with the pointer finger of your opposite hand.
“1, 2, 3, 4, 5” Touch each finger while counting out loud.
Next time, replace the first number with the sound “SH”.
“ sh, 2, 3, 4, 5” Next, move it over one until you have placed your rest in every spot. “1, sh, 3, 4, 5” “1, 2, sh, 4, 5” “1, 2, 3, sh, 5” “1, 2, 3, 4, sh”
Additionally, you could stomp your feet, touch your head, stick out your foot or even turn around so that you feel the rest.
The super challenge is to remove the verbal “sh” and replace it with an internally felt “sh”.
Resting is important too! In music, there is a time to play and there is a time for silence. Learning when NOT to play is just as important as learning when to play. A musical REST is a symbol that is used to tell the musician when to STOP playing. Even though you won’t be playing during a rest, strive to feel the pulse as though you were making an inside sound.
