Here’s a version of the ‘Simon Says’ game that is fun for all ages. The adult claps a range of rhythms, no more than 4 beats long, using hands, body, voice, even the floor and the children copy the rhythms. However, if they hear in any form the ‘Don’t clap this one back” (tah, tah, ti-ti, tah) rhythm – they do not clap it back. Every time someone claps the rhythm when they are not supposed to, the parent gets a point. If no one claps when they hear ‘don’t clap this one back’ the children get a point. You can also extend the rhythmic patterns to 8 beats long, making for a larger musical memory challenge and you use the phrase, ‘Don’t clap this one back otherwise you’re out” (tah, tah, ti-ti, tah, ti-ti, tah, tah, tah) Have fun!
A suggested reading for your young child is The Philharmonic Gets Dressed – Karla Kusking and Marc Simont. This lovely book demonstrates the individual members of the orchestra preparing to join one another in glorious music making. Some DVD’s that invite participation from the audience are “A Fun-derful Day” with Sharon, Lois and Bram, The Baby Einstein; Meet the Orchestra – First Instruments.
To be part of an ensemble is the highest point in the life of a musician! Bringing all of the different elements of music together creates community amongst performers. The discovery of how to find ease with the idea ‘starting, staying and stopping’ together keeps everyone guessing!
