The clarinet is a musical instrument in the woodwind family of the orchestra. The instrument most commonly known today is the B-flat clarinet; the next most common is the clarinet in A. Other woodwind instruments are the saxophone, bassoon, oboe, recorder, piccolo and flute. The clarinet was a central to early jazz starting in the 1910s and remaining popular through the big band era into the 1940s.The instrument remains popular in Dixieland music. Musician, Pete Fountain is one of the best known clarinet performers in this genre. Filmmaker Woody Allen is a notable jazz clarinet enthusiast, and performs jazz regularly with his quartet in New York City.
